The function of an analog input, also known as an AI or AIN, is to convert voltage levels of an item into a digital value that can be processed and stored inside of a computer. An AO or analog output, on the other hand, does the opposite in that it converts the digital value from a computer into a voltage level that is presented on an output terminal so as to provide an adjustable output.
The benefits of using an analog computer are that voltages can be easily measured by almost any measuring hardware and then processed onto the computer. Not only that but from then a computer can convert the voltage value into pressure, temperature, or whatever its original type is and the value can then be emailed to someone, stored in a file, or used to control something else outside of the computer.
There are various different hardware assembly items that can measure voltage levels before transferring them over to a computer. Such items include the USB DAQ device, which has 4 dedicated into either a digital or analog, and can thus provide up to 16 analog inputs, or up to 16 digital I/O. It also has two 10-bit analog outputs, up to 2 counters, and up to 2 timers. Other such hardware parts include the UE9, which acts as an ethernet DAQ device. The UE9 has 14 analog inputs (12- to 16-bit), 2 analog outputs (12-bit), 23 digital I/O, up to 2 counters, and up to 6 timers.
Other hardware parts that you can use as analog inputs or analog outputs include but are not limited to the U12, U7, and T4 measuring devices.
