This month a division of United Technologies Corp., Pratt & Whitney announced that it will invest roughly $386 million dollars into its Columbus, Georgia facility. This investment will increase production of parts and also the maintenance services and this will also reduce existing and new engine programs. With many equipment upgrades, construction of two new buildings and purchase of new automated machinery. The largest new area will be constructed for the facility to overhaul GTF engines with over 200,000 square feet to work with. This will include a 20,000 square foot manufacturing facility for specialized parts, and an area to develop turbine disks and compressor rotors for Pratt & Whitney Engines.
Many upgrades to equipment are also planned and will be unveiled upon completion of the expansion.
"We're investing heavily in our Columbus facility to support the increased production and services planned for our F135 and GTF engines,"said Chris Calio, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines.
"This investment will help ensure that we have the appropriate infrastructure, tooling and trained workforce in place to provide the best products and services to our customers worldwide. The tremendous support we receive from the community and state have contributed to our success in Georgia."
"Pratt & Whitney has maintained a presence in Muscogee County since 1984 and this latest expansion speaks to Georgia's support for our robust aerospace industry,"said Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal.
"Georgia's pro-business structural framework and deep talent pool help to retain industry leaders such as Pratt & Whitney. By adding these new high-quality manufacturing jobs, Pratt & Whitney is making a significant investment in the Columbus community and we look forward to strengthening this longstanding partnership as the company continues to grow."
Another great aspect of this expansion is the relationship Pratt & Whiney has with Columbus Technical College. This will provide new and existing employees with new training centers that they did not have in past. Columbus Technical College will provide short and long term programs for aerospace and advanced manufacturing technologies that will support the company’s growth better. This location maintains and overhauls the PW1100G-JM, V2500, PW2000, F117 and F100 engines at the Columbus location.
"This announcement from Pratt & Whitney is the latest example of the hard work put forth every day by our economic development team locally and the professionals at the Georgia Department of Economic Development,"
said Brian Anderson, president & CEO of the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
"The project would not have happened without the tremendous relationships we have with the local Pratt & Whitney leadership team here in Columbus as well as those at both Pratt & Whitney and United Technologies Corporation in Connecticut."
This expansion is not only significant for the Pratt & Whitney business but also for the community of Columbus, Georgia.

Chris Pocock write an article for AIN Online on September 8th 2016, talking about how Lord Corporation is providing a newly improved vibration control system of IVCS for the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Completion of this program milestones under a contract that was rewarded by Boeing in late 2013.
Here is what Stuart Hartwell, the business development manager for Lord Global Aerospace & Defense says that
“The IVCS represents a major step in bringing significant weight savings to the H-47 platform.”
In order to measure aircraft vibration levels, the IVCS technology uses accelerometers. In addition to this there is a centralized computer that signals throughout a software algorithm in order to read data and send commands to force generators. The force generators are located under the seats of the pilot. In turn, these force generators will create an “anti vibration” that will then stop the progression of vibration. From these, this will create a comfortable vibration environment for the cabin.
There will also be a direct replacement or drop in replacement that can be used as a heavy passive turned vibration absorber. Here is was Pocock has mentioned that Mike Janowski stated.
“According to Mike Janowski, manager of electromechanical design at Lord, the IVCS is easily installed using existing mounts on the aircraft and outperforms the legacy system. It could be retrofitted to the MH-47Gs of U.S. Special Operations Command, as well as existing CH-47Fs and Chinooks that have been exported via the Foreign Military sales (FMS) process.”
Pratt & Whitney came to an agreement with the government on April 11 to provide 53 engines for Lockheed Martin F-35As, F-35Cs, and F-35B. This contract is estimated of over $1 Billion. To top off this massive deal, Pratt & Whitney is set to come to an agreement with Pentagon for another order in the coming days.
Lockheed Martin F-35 is a single seat, single engine aircraft that is designed for ground attack and air defense missions. The first F-35 flight took place back on December 15, 2006. The US is set to complete it’s F-35 fleet in 2037.
Pratt & Whitney have provided over 273 engines so far from their Middletown, CT & West Palm Beach, FL manufacturing facilities since the beginning of the F135 production back in 2009. The Pratt & Whitney F135 can reach a maximum thrust of 43,000lbf, and a 28,000lbf intermediate, with a 28:1 overall pressure ratio.
This order is the first 66 of the 167 Pratt & Whitney F135 propulsion systems that the United States and other NATO members and close U.S. allies have purchased. Mark Buongiorno, Vice-President of Pratt & Whitney’s F135 engine program has stated that they
“Remain laser-focused on reducing costs, meeting our delivery schedule commitments, ensuring dependable engine performance and preparing for global sustainment”.
The United States were not the only ones involved in this transaction. Italy, Norway, United Kingdom, Israel, and Japan also contributed in the $1 Billion purchase, with The United States covering over 56% of the funding. The F-35 is the most expensive military weapon system in history.
