NanoRacks and Boeing to join forces to create the first privately funded commercial airlock. This could possibly enable the U.S. to triple the number of small deployed satellites from the International Space Station during only one single airlock. NanoRacks has selected Boeing to create and install the new airlock on the international space station. This new airlock is currently being manufactured at the Alabama Boeing facility along with other engineering services required for development. Safety, operations, quality assurance, avionics along with mechanical design and of course the final assembly of the airlock. The NanoRacks airlock will be permanently installed onboard the International Space Station once fully developed with an estimated launch date of 2019.

At the Humans to Mars summit held in May of this year, Lockheed Martin announced that it will be joining SpaceX and NASA, just to name a few, in exploring Mars. Lockheed currently plans on building a staffed space laboratory that will orbit the red planet by 2028. A goal that is ambitious, not only because a manned mission to Mars has yet to take place but because they intend to beat NASA’s already anticipated goal by 2 years. This is Lockheed’s attempt to convince the space agency to implements the firm’s design plans before it sends astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.

In an alarming bit of space news, NASA revealed that their prized Kepler spacecraft has been in emergency mode for the past several days and they are now frantically trying to resuscitate it. The issue was first discovered by NASA ground controllers on Thursday April 7th. NASA had decided to adjust the Kepler spacecraft to point towards the center of the Milky Way, but when ground control issued the command, there are several manufacturers for production of space craft.
