Pratt & Whitney came to an agreement with the government on April 11 to provide 53 engines for Lockheed Martin F-35As, F-35Cs, and F-35B. This contract is estimated of over $1 Billion. To top off this massive deal, Pratt & Whitney is set to come to an agreement with Pentagon for another order in the coming days.
Lockheed Martin F-35 is a single seat, single engine aircraft that is designed for ground attack and air defense missions. The first F-35 flight took place back on December 15, 2006. The US is set to complete it’s F-35 fleet in 2037.
Pratt & Whitney have provided over 273 engines so far from their Middletown, CT & West Palm Beach, FL manufacturing facilities since the beginning of the F135 production back in 2009. The Pratt & Whitney F135 can reach a maximum thrust of 43,000lbf, and a 28,000lbf intermediate, with a 28:1 overall pressure ratio.
This order is the first 66 of the 167 Pratt & Whitney F135 propulsion systems that the United States and other NATO members and close U.S. allies have purchased. Mark Buongiorno, Vice-President of Pratt & Whitney’s F135 engine program has stated that they
“Remain laser-focused on reducing costs, meeting our delivery schedule commitments, ensuring dependable engine performance and preparing for global sustainment”.
The United States were not the only ones involved in this transaction. Italy, Norway, United Kingdom, Israel, and Japan also contributed in the $1 Billion purchase, with The United States covering over 56% of the funding. The F-35 is the most expensive military weapon system in history.
