Aurora Flight Sciences is determined to find ways to develop new and advanced ways to fly vertically from the ground without the help or the need for a pilot. This system has been at work for many years where people are trying to achieve autonomous flight system for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). This project is being planned to create an unmanned UH-1H helicopter, an UH-1H helicopter that is fully capable with advanced VTOL systems making it one of the few helicopters of its kind.
This project has been begun as a project for the Aurora’s work on the Autonomous Aerial Cargo Utility System (AACUS) in order to speed up the delivery time of any cargo without the need for a human operator. They have mentioned that at least in the beginning it can be operated without a human operator and once the project has taken full motion then a person can be added to the project. This has become such an exciting project because the implementation of this project mean that we can develop an unmanned helicopters that vertically land and take-off but however there is always obstacles and that’s why it is such a challenge because you have to create a system that can be aware of dynamic obstacle detection with avoidance and allows unprepared landing in unidentified areas possible.
