A New Multispectral Imaging System on Airplanes
We don’t usually think about light but people began to learn about light more than a thousand years ago. What are the characteristics of light and is the light we see the only light that exist? This was discovered by one of the most famous physicist of all time, Isaac Newton. When he was studying the different wavelengths of light he was experimenting with the different characteristics of the colors of the rainbow. He discovered that at every wavelength or every color of the rainbow carries different energy and the way he found that out is by placing a thermometer under each color. He had a piece of crystal that can reflect the suns light to all the colors of the rainbow on the table he placed it placed on. He placed a thermometer under each color and he saw a steady increase of temperature as he moved from one color to the next. The most interesting thing is that after he passed all the colors he placed the thermostat on the table close to the rainbow but not under any of the colors reflected from the crystal, what he saw was astonishing because the thermostat had the highest reading from all colors. That’s when the infrared light was discovered.
Moving in time more than a thousand years later and now we are able to manipulate and use with all its wavelengths to our advantage. Crane Industries has mentioned that the US Navy is going to be using Short Wave Infrared cameras (SWIR) for one of their targeting systems, the Multospectral Targeting System (MTS). This creates a whole new technology for Targeting systems especially for night vision targeting and for detecting heated objects in the sky when aiming. Infrared electro-optics, Multispectral Targeting System (MTS), Quantum Multispectral Targeting System are all going to become tools for the future especially in the favor of the air force.
